Book Description: Much has been written about how government works, but there has been little systematic analysis of how government does not work. This book analyses the whole range of public policy problems, drawing on insights from a range of academic disciplines, policy areas, and practical experience, with examples drawn from both the United Kingdom and the United States of America. The book is based on the novel concept of the analytical taxonomy of the pathologies of policy making. The use of this medical metaphor provides a framework for the categorization of the diseases of public policy and contributes to an understanding of the nature of policy dysfunctions and their treatment. The analogy helps to organize the material: it does not govern it. The pathologies discussed in the book are grouped into seven categories: congenital disorders, organizational pathologies, information pathologies, delusions, obesity, problems of budgeting, and terminal illness. The possibilities for treating some of these pathologies are then discussed and attention is drawn to the possible pathological consequences of the treatments themselves. Finally, the potential and deficiencies of a number of factors for diagnosing and treating policy pathologies are reviewed.

Book Description: This policy-relevant study grew out of an evaluation conducted by its authors - all scholars at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the Royal Tropical Institute, Amsterdam - of the World Health Organization's Action Programme on Essential Drugs. Their review, involving 13 country studies and WHO's five regional offices, looks at how the idea of a rational drug policy in developing countries came about, evaluates the achievements in specific countries, and discusses some of the issues that remain to be resolved - particularly issues around AIDs, contraception and cost recovery. It should prove useful to policy makers and academics, teachers and students, managers and professionals, as well as international agencies in the health field.

Book Description: American physician and attorney Cohen discusses legal, ethical, and policy considerations faced by society as it deals with psychoactive drug use. A recurring theme is the need to balance individual liberty and autonomy with the needs of society. None of the several models that have been devised to that end is completely satisfying, he says, and all of them raise important questions. The book cites legislation and court decisions extensively.
