Book Description: Hip-hop culture began in the early 1970s as the creative and activist expressions -- graffiti writing, dee-jaying, break dancing, and rap music -- of black and Latino youth in the depressed South Bronx, and the movement has since grown into a worldwide cultural phenomenon that permeates almost every aspect of society, from speech to dress. But although hip-hop has been assimilated and exploited in the mainstream, young black women who came of age during the hip-hop era are still fighting for equality. In this provocative study, Gwendolyn D. Pough explores the complex relationship between black women, hip-hop, and feminism. Examining a wide range of genres, including rap music, novels, spoken word poetry, hip-hop cinema, and hip-hop soul music, she traces the rhetoric of black women "bringing wreck." Pough demonstrates how influential women rappers such as Queen Latifah, Missy Elliot, and Lil' Kim are building on the legacy of earlier generations of women -- from Sojourner Truth to sisters of the black power and civil rights movements -- to disrupt and break into the dominant patriarchal public sphere. She discusses the ways in which today's young black women struggle against the stereotypical language of the past ("castrating black mother," "mammy," "sapphire") and the present ("bitch," "ho," "chickenhead"), and shows how rap provides an avenue to tell their own life stories, to construct their identities, and to dismantle historical and contemporary negative representations of black womanhood. Pough also looks at the ongoing public dialogue between male and female rappers about love and relationships, explaining how the denigrating rhetoric used by men has been appropriated by black women rappers as a means to empowerment in their own lyrics. The author concludes with a discussion of the pedagogical implications of rap music as well as of third wave and black feminism. This fresh and thought-provoking perspective on the complexities of hip-hop urges young black women to harness the energy, vitality, and activist roots of hip-hop culture and rap music to claim a public voice for themselves and to "bring wreck" on sexism and misogyny in mainstream society.

Book Description: After the psychologically scarring death of her father, wild child Rosie Dwyer is introduced to journal keeping. She initially considers this writing form to be cliché. Before the death, Rosie valued chaos and rebellion- from “protest-peeing” in class to shoving a Twinkie in a classmate’s eye. However, once Rosie gives into this mode of writing, a cathartic obsession begins. Her entries often focus on her childhood enemy, Logan Fields, after he becomes Rosie’s permanent peer editor in creative writing class. While Rosie loses touch with both loved ones and reality, an unlikely friendship builds between her and Logan. Together, they must try to find the meaning behind insanity--in the school theatre, in the public library, and in the middle of a false Apocalypse.

Book Description: Roland Tankowicz wasn’t even legally a person anymore. The aging cyborg had never really recovered from being betrayed and enslaved by his superiors in the Army, and the final insult of being permanently classified as “defunct military ordnance” had been a bitter pill to swallow. For the last three decades, he's avoided dealing with this by drinking beer and working as a fixer for the crime families in 25th-century Boston. It's easy money when you're the kind of guy who is bullet-proof and can pick up a house. But then Lucia Ribiero stumbles into his favorite watering hole dragging a squad of bounty hunters behind her. Shadows from his own dark past, and old debts still unpaid conspire to drive the old war-horse out for one more mission. Like any good soldier, the mission is all that matters for Roland. What follows is action and adventure on a scale the galaxy may never recover from. In this volume be prepared to see Roland fight cyborgs, gangsters, mercenaries, crime lords, mutants and at least one angry corporate executive as he starts down the ugly path to redemption. The guns will blaze and fists will fly, but before the dust settles a whole galaxy's worth of mad science gone awry will learn a painful lesson about letting sleeping dogs lie. Collected here are the first three full-length novels in the critically-acclaimed tech-noir phenomenon known as: THE FIXER

Book Description: Roland Tankowicz is fed up. He’s really trying to be a better person. Killing fewer people, talking out his issues more, and not immediately resorting to violence whenever a problem arises. But let’s face it, when you are a hammer, everything looks like a nail. It’s not like he has any shortage of nails kicking around, either. After stopping that last batch of mobsters and pirates from upsetting the delicate balance of New Boston’s seedy underworld, the list of people willing to pay hard creds for his head is even longer than usual. Worse, The Brokerage still wants Dockside, and they have called in a ringer. Who is this guy who seems to know an awful lot about Dockside’s most famous Fixer? Where did he get all this classified information? Who are these unregistered mercenaries that keep popping up at inopportune moments? Roland will need the help of all his allies if he wants to run down the answers to these questions before a galactic crime war leaves the streets of his beloved hometown awash in blood. But at least there is one thing everybody agrees on: Dockside is done playing by mob rules. The war for the docks is coming to a head, and there is no guarantee that anyone will be left standing when the dust settles. It will be up to everybody’s least-favorite Army-surplus cyborg to take the fight out of Dockside and into the streets of New Boston. The stakes have never been higher, and the fight never more desperate than now. But Roland Tankowicz is mad as hell, and no matter what happens, a whole new crop of mad Science gone awry is about to learn a painful lesson about the differences between HAMMERS AND NAILS.

Book Description: “The Road to Nirvana” is a coming-of-age story told through the now ancient eyes of Theodore Herald. The manuscript shares a plethora of life-lessons told through a series of engagingly charming vignettes intended to sweep the reader, gently at first, into the raging torrent of modern history to its inevitable, though dramatic conclusion. Embedded comfortably alongside this story is a viewpoint of appalling viciousness, deceit, and corruption as told by Jimmy DeMarco and his hoodlum in training, “The Count.” Consigned to the dustbin of history the town of Glory fights desperately for survival. Evil paralyzes the populace. Set in the fictional 1950’s town of Glory, Ted’s steady maturation is vastly accelerated when a series of brutal murders force him to choose between a trusted confidant and mentor or the status-quo and the rampant racial prejudice that dominates the town. The victims are discovered partially dismembered in shallow graves near his friend’s home by a survey crew for an improved road that links Glory with the neighboring town of Nirvana. This is a cautionary tale that reminds us that the folly of youth may come back to haunt us. It invokes the boyhood adventure of Tom Sawyer with the courtroom drama of Earl Stanley Gardner while recalling a simpler time. It also recounts the ugliness of society before the term “politically correct” was a part of our daily lexicon. Theodore Herald, who is at best a devil-may-care youth and at worst a juvenile delinquent, is suddenly thrust into the harsh spotlight of notoriety when he testifies on behalf of his friend. The metamorphosis from gleeful purveyor of skullduggery to responsible adult is like flipping a light switch. Unfortunately, Ted’s credibility is called into question when his colorful past is revealed. Lives hang in the balance as a deliciously twisted ending unfolds.

Book Description: A crime masterpiece brought back into print - and transformed into the major film, Killing Them Softly, starring Brad Pitt. Jackie Cogan doesn't advertise what he does. But when the New England mob have a mess they need cleared up, they know who to call. Markie Trattman runs a high-stakes card-game under their protection. When the game gets raided by a couple of no-name hoodlums, Jackie's out of pocket. Unless of course he set up the heist himself. Either way the mob's got a problem. To restore credibility and keep things running smooth, they need to find out who's behind the heist - and then justice must be seen to be done. Which is where Jackie comes in. The trouble is, this is one game with a lot of players, including an out-of-town hitman, a sleazy attorney, a professional dog-stealer, and enough hoods, hangers-on and high-rollers to really make Jackie earn his dough. Filmed as Killing Them Softly.

Book Description: This sparkling collection of short stories explores the effects of loss, and the surprising ways people find to keep going, for “fans of Alice Munro and Marilynne Robinson” (Refinery29). In these lucid, sharply observant stories, Mandeliene Smith traces the lives of men and women in moments of crisis: a woman whose husband has just died, a social worker struggling to escape his own past, a girl caught in a standoff between her mother’s boyfriend and the police. Wise and insightful, Smith is “an uncommonly talented writer with a particularly sharp eye for the serrated edge of human nature” (Publishers Weekly). In “What It Takes,” a teenage girl navigates race and class as the school’s pot dealer. “The Someday Cat” follows a small girl terrified of being given away by her neglectful mother. “Three Views of a Pond” is a meditation on the healing time brings for a college student considering suicide. And in “Animals,” a child wrestles with the contradictions inherent in her family’s relationship with the farm animals they both care for and kill. In barnyards, office buildings, and dilapidated houses, Smith’s characters fight for happiness and survival, and the choices they make reveal the power of instinct to save or destroy. Whether she’s writing about wives struggling with love, teenage girls resisting authority, or men and women reeling from loss, Smith illuminates her characters with pointed, gorgeous language and searing insight. Rutting Season is “an arresting debut short story collection…At once powerful and delicate, compassionate and clear-eyed, this book is sure to breed interest in a new literary voice” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).

Book Description: Toys--those celebrated childhood cohorts and lead actors in children's imaginative play--have a fantastic history of heroism in fiction. From teddy bears that guard sleeping babies to plastic soldiers and cowboys who lay siege to wooden block castles, toys are often the heroes of the stories children inspire authors to tell. In this collection of new essays, scholars from a great range of disciplines examine fictional toys as protectors of the children they love, as heroes of their own stories, and as champions for the greater good in the writings of A.A. Milne, Hans Christian Andersen, William Joyce, John Lasseter and many others.
