Book Description: Noted wild horse and hoof care expert Jaime Jackson spent four years, in the 1980s, in the U.S. Great Basin conducting field studies on the wild, free-roaming horses - both on his own in the wild as well as at the BLM corrals following gathers of the horses. An accomplished farrier at the time, Jackson conducted and recorded all hoof measurements, with the assistance of BLM personnel, within 48 hours of the horses arrival into the Corrals in order to have a standardized population of 'naturally shaped hooves' unaffected by any direct intervention from humans. His groundbreaking and landmark findings were published in 1992 in his first book, The Natural Horse: Lessons from the Wild. Twenty years later, Jackson has delivered what is sure to be the definitive book on healthy, natural barefoot hoof care for anyone interested in understanding how to stimulate the growth of a healthy foot or how to properly trim a naturally healthy hoof. Jackson explains in detail on a number of different healthy and pathological hooves how to apply the same technique in order to stimulate healthy natural growth patterns to emerge in a foot and to encourage the growth of a naturally shaped hoof, which in turn, will help the horse function more naturally and move more naturally. The natural trim is just one part of NHC - Natural Hoof/Horse Care - and must be combined with other elements to achieve optimal health in your horse. NHC is the best defense against Laminitis, Navicular Syndrome, White Line Disease, Club Foot, Wry Foot, Slipper Toe and other diseases and disorders. Jackson also uses his 40 years of experience to help the reader understand how to move around the horse in a safe, efficient manner in order to effectively trim the hooves. There is an additional chapter on removing horseshoes as well.

Book Description: The equine hoof is a complex marvel of natural engineering, built to withstand tremendous forces and able to adapt to an astonishing range of environmental conditions. It also changes daily–for better or for worse–in response to external and internal factors. Few horse owners have the opportunity to acquire a deep understanding of the hoof, which limits their ability to advocate on their horses’ behalf and make informed decisions about hoof care and management. This book is the first resource of its kind to combine the most current and useful information available, gleaned from the research and wisdom of top hoof experts around the world, with a unique “hands-on” approach. The authors provide basic terms and anatomy, clearly illustrate the differences between healthy and unhealthy feet, discuss biomechanics and management concerns, and cover the causes, treatments, and prevention of commonly encountered problems, including laminitis, white line disease, and thrush. Along the way, readers are given activities to help them better analyze and understand the most important aspects of equine hoof health, such as hoof balance, depth of sole, and point of breakover. Easy–to–follow language, over 400 full–color photographs, and do–it–yourself exercises promise to empower horse owners and caretakers of all experience levels with the tools they need to accurately assess hoof health and keep their horses as sound and happy as possible.

Book Description: Paddock Paradise (PP) is both a book title and a concept of a more naturalized way of horse keeping based upon the research done on the Great Basin wild horses by natural horse care expert and author, Jaime Jackson. PP is a must-read for any horse-owner or professional who wants to create an environment of more optimal mental and physical health for their horses while drastically reducing the number of hours spent on 'barn' chores. Jackson explains to readers why the concept works and how to create one in a simple and inexpensive manner. Not only do horses exercise more but also eat in the manner that nature intended . Research has shown that free-roaming horses are healthier than stabled ones but many kinds of pasture grasses can cause laminitis. PP is the solution for these issues and others that plauge horse owners around the world. "PP is an emerging trend," according to a summer 2011 issue of "The Horse" magazine.

Book Description: Natural Barefoot Trimming; The Hoof Guided Method offers a unique method of barefoot trimming based on reading the hoof. Learn what to trim and what to leave alone in order to allow nature to quickly transform the hoof. The Hoof Guided Method is truly a less is more method based on the theory that a barefoot trim should mimic - or simulate - the action of the ground on the hoof, and that the true purpose of the trim is to stimulate the foot to grow healthy. Simulate and stimulate. Learn to stop micro-managing the hoof and work with nature instead of trying to force man's ideals onto the hoof. The hoof responds to everything it experiences, and that includes trimming. By trimming only what is indicated, then waiting for the hoof to respond, the foot is allowed to transform itself. And it will. The definition of insanity is repeating the same thing over and over and expecting different results. The Hoof Guided Method shows you how to read the hoof and get real results in a short amount of time.

Chapters: Caulkin, Farrier, Hipposandal, Hoof boot, Hoof glue, Horseshoe, Horse hoof, Jaime Jackson, Laminitis, Natural hoof care, Navicular Disease, Quittor, Thrush (horse). Excerpt: Laminitis is a disease that affects the feet of ungulates. It is best known in horses and cattle. Clinical signs include lameness, inflammation, and increased temperature in the hooves. Laminitis is characterized by inflammation of the digital laminae of the hoof, and severe cases with outwardly visibly clinical signs are known by the colloquial term founder. The digital laminae are responsible for suspension of the axial skeleton of the animal within the hooves of ungulates, and act as shock absorbers during locomotion. In horses there are about 600 pairs of interleaved laminae: the epidermal laminae attached to the hoof wall and the dermal laminae attached to the coffin bone (a.k.a. PIII, P3, the third phalanx, pedal bone, or distal phalanx). Laminitis literally means inflammation of the laminae, and while it remains controversial whether this is the primary mechanism of disease, evidence of inflammation occurs very early in some instances of the disease. Laminitis is characterized by a 'compromise in the interaction' of the Laminae between the hoof wall and the coffin bone, the mechanism of which remains unclear and is currently the subject of much research. Laminitis can be either mechanical or systemic. Mechanical laminitis starts when the hoof wall is pulled away from the bone or lost, as a result of external influences. Mechanical laminitis can occur when a horse habitually paws, is ridden or driven on hard surfaces (or loses laminar function, due to an injury or pathologies affecting the hoof wall). Systemic laminitis is usually bilateral (on two feet) and though it can affect any number of feet, it is most common in the front feet. At...

Book Description: From Pegasus to Black Beauty, horses have held a unique place in human society and imagination. Elaine Walker tackles the long and multifaceted history of a creature valued for both beauty and usefulness. Spanning the world from the wild steppes of Mongolia to the American plains, Horse chronicles the rich and complex natural history of the animal, from wild feral horses to the domesticated species that once played a central role in daily life as a means of transportation, an instrument of war, and a source of labour. Elaine Walker charts how the long-standing connection between people and horses is reflected in cultures around the world and the implications for both human and animal of such close interaction. She also traces the centrality of the horse in art, entertainment and literature, from the rich global traditions of horse-racing and equestrianism to literary classics such as Follyfoot. Ultimately, Walker contends, the continuing role of the horse in the modern world reveals telling changes in human society.

Book Description: In the 1980s, the world of riding, training, and competing with horses took a major turn with the spread of natural horsemanship, which at its most basic foundation rejects the use of abusive techniques and relies on methods derived from understanding the dynamics of free-roaming horse herds. Since then, equestrians across disciplines have incorporated elements of natural horsemanship into their work. But despite what was certainly an advancement in human-equine interaction that has improved the lives of many horses, Italian animal behaviorists Francesco de Giorgio and José de Giorgio-Schoorl dare to now ask, What if much of what we think we know about horses is, in fact, wrong? What if the premise of herd hierarchy is a myth? What if “conditioning” the horse’s behavior in the ways we’ve grown accustomed is undercutting his potential for development? What if there is another—better—level of partnership to which we can aspire? Their provocative book takes us into a dimension where we shed our assumptions of leadership, dominance, and control, convincingly showing a way forward that acknowledges that a horse, when allowed, is driven by his own inner motivation to explore and understand the world around him, including his relationship with humans.
