Book Description: The groundwater table plays a significant role in the waterlogging and salinization problems in irrigated farmland in the Aral Sea Basin. The spatio-temporal dynamics of groundwater table and salinity from 1990 to 2000 were studied in the district of Khorezm at the lower Amu-Darya River. The groundwater table was shallow. During the cropping period, 65-70% of the irrigated area was at potential risk of waterlogging and salinization. Although "hotspots" of high groundwater salinity dynamics were found in areas differing in soil texture, it is the water management practice that is the most decisive factor. Based on this analysis, the study concludes with recommendations for remediation.

Book Description: The aim of this paper is to facilitate the planning and design of land drainage systems for sound land and water management for engineers and other professionals. It considers the integration of technical, socio-economic and environmental factors and the need for system users' participation in the planning, design, operation and maintenance processes. The text provides guidelines for the appropriate identification of drainage problems, for the planning and design of field drainage systems (surface and subsurface) and the main drainage and disposal systems. The annexes provide more detailed information with technical background, appropriate equations, some cross-references for finding appropriate methodologies, and computer programs for calculation of extreme values, of permeability and some land drainage system parameters. --Publisher's description.

Book Description: With a roster of international contributors, this volume offers an abundance of solutions to address agricultural water management challenges in today’s water-scarce areas of the world. The authors present studies on farmer-friendly irrigation scheduling methods, model-based analysis of crop water requirements, ways to optimize surface irrigation systems, and hydraulic design and management of surface water systems. The book goes on to highlight ways to improve soil properties by taking into account spatial, temporal, and spectral variability in soil properties. The volume also covers various innovative research studies on soil and water productivity of vegetable cultivation under water-stressed areas, application of coir geotextiles, and the role of biofertilizers in controlling soil degradation and maintaining fertile topsoil. Crop management strategies to enhance the efficient use of marginal and saline lands for nonconventional crops are also discussed. The book is divided into four sections, covering: engineering interventions in irrigation management technological interventions in management of soil properties technological inventions for soil and water conservation crop management for non-conventional use This volume will serve as an invaluable resource for academicians, researchers, engineers, agronomists, extension officers, students, and farmers in the broad discipline of agricultural and biological engineering.

Book Description: This publication fills a void of practical guidelines for the construction of small earth dams. It presents readers with sound, reliable and practical source material to improve dam siting and design capacity in rural areas, to introduce a beneficiary and gender sensitive approach and to enhance safety and competence in construction. A section also provides convenient guidance on costing, drafting tenders and awarding contracts. The manual is primarily aimed at technicians and others with knowledge of engineering and basic irrigation systems and processes to apply the concepts, techniques and methods proposed, using simple and straightforward design and construction procedures.

Book Description: With the strong competition that is arising for water resources the modernisation of irrigation systems is becoming a critical issue. One of the alternatives to modernisation is the use of pressurised systems to replace part of the existing networks. This publication analyses the performance of pressurised irrigation systems operating on demand, and provides revised criteria for the design of such irrigation networks. For this purpose, new approaches and a computer program have been developed. The program has been tested in several field situations in the Mediterranean Basin and has demonstrated its usefulness not only by quickly identifying weak points in irrigation networks but also by identifying the power requirements of pumping stations needed to satisfy varying demand situations.
